Social Studies
In the Christina School District, social studies education prepares students to be informed, engaged citizens in a diverse and changing world. Guided by the Delaware Social Studies Standards, students explore civics, geography, history, and economics to develop critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving skills. Through the study of democratic principles, global connections, historical perspectives, and economic decision-making, students learn to analyze complex issues, consider multiple viewpoints, and understand their roles in their communities and beyond. Our social studies program empowers students to participate thoughtfully in civic life and apply their learning to real-world challenges.
Delaware Social Studies Standards
Delaware standards for social studies set end-of-year expectations for each grade as students progress towards college and career readiness expectations. In Delaware, social studies standards are organized in the following areas:
Disciplinary Literacy
Disciplinary Literacy strategies and skills are applied as students acquire information and communicate their learning and understanding in social studies. The integration of literacy and social studies is critical for student success. Christina School District students are explicitly taught research-based strategies that help to improve adolescent literacy. In today's world, students are bombarded with visuals, images, and information, that may not be credible sources of information. Sorting through primary and secondary sources of information requires that students formulate questions, think critically, and connect to multiple texts.
