On August 12, 2025, the Delaware General Assembly reconvened for a special session to address the property tax hardships experienced by residential homeowners after the first reassessment in over 40 years. New Castle County saw a significant growth in residential property values, but much less growth in non-residential property values. The county implemented a separate, higher non-residential property tax rate to compensate for the disparity, but school districts could not legally do the same. The General Assembly passed HB242 to allow school districts to implement a separate non-residential property tax rate.
On August 21, 2025, the Christina School Board approved new residential and non-residential tax rates as allowed by HB242. The residential tax rate is 0.61499%, and the non-residential rate is 1.21023%.
