West Street Art Festival
The West Street Art Festival is June 11th at the Delaware Contemporary. The CSD art exhibit, "Nourish", will be on display at the event and through August. Every school that submitted work for the District Art Show has a work on display in this exhibit! This day of creative fun features indoor and outdoor art-based activities, performances, vendors, food trucks, and refreshments. Festival highlights include fun and resourceful giveaways, activities by local partners, live demonstrations from emerging to professional artists, and debuts the 2023-24 Discover Space artist selected from the ArtSource registry. Not only does West Street Art Festival shine a light on the museum’s continued effort to support local and emerging artists, but provides a platform for artist and community-driven organizations and businesses to extend outreach and awareness.

Governor’s Summer Fellowship Program
Delaware high school juniors and seniors are invited to apply to this year's Governor’s Summer Fellowship Program, which provides students with paid work opportunities at community-based summer camps in each county, on-site mentoring, and the ability to network with state leaders and elected officials. Participants will work approximately 35 hours a week from June 20 – August 11. Applications are now open. This program is offered through a partnership with the DDOE and the United Way of Delaware. Last year, 47 Summer Fellows held positions at 19 sites across the state, serving 475 campers. This year, the program aims to expand to 100 Summer Fellows: More information.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. The ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses and potential for future success in four domains: verbal, math, science and technical, and spatial.
One of the most critical of these scores is the armed forces qualification test, which is used to determine whether you are qualified to join the military service. Each service determines the qualifying AFQT score for enlisting in their service.

6th Grade Math (Brown): The next 15 Imagine Math lessons need to be completed by June 13th for marking period 4. This means that students should have completed 60 lessons total this year. This is a summative grade worth 100 points. Students who have completed their lessons currently have their 100 points in both Schoology and HAC updated. Otherwise, students have their homework marked as “incomplete” for now. I will update their grades again at the end of the week. I recommend students keep a record of their lessons using the Imagine Math Tracker in Schoology (assignment).
STEM (Mayer): Students have begun designing their last STEM Project…Rubber Band Race Cars! They will start engineering their car this week with a goal of having their race car travel the farthest distance. Most items needed are already in our classroom but students will need to bring in materials for tires. Some examples are CDs, gatorade bottle caps, soda/water bottle caps, toy tires, and lego tires. Distance race will be this Thursday, 6/8.
6th Grade Science (Mayer): Students are continuing to explore thermal energy. This week students continue learning about conduction, convection, and radiation. Science students will also have a post-test at the end of this week to see what they have learned throughout this school year. B day’s post-test is on Wednesday, 6/7 and A day’s post-test is on Thursday, 6/8. Students CAN use their journals during the test.
Mrs. Whitaker 7th & 8th Grade Math: 15 Imagine Math lessons need to be completed by June 6. This is a summative grade. Their current number of passed lessons is in Schoology (not HAC). It does not update automatically. I will update again in 2 weeks. I recommend students keep a record of their passed lessons.
6th grade Gilpin Social Studies: The students have already taken their end of year posttest that is used for planning and pacing guide for next year. There are no more summatives as they finished their 3D map last week. Their last large formative, 100 points, their 51st State Project was also completed last week. They will not have a final exam. Students are taking their journals home with them this week.
Health class, Gilpin 6th grade: The students took their last two summatives, Bones and Muscles quiz last week. This week we will be walking on the track and pulse checking. No final will be given.
Zrebiec 7th grade Science: The 7th grade science students will take their Science Journals HOME this week and use them to prepare for their Science Post Test. This Post Test is NOT graded but will be scored for curriculum planning and pacing. Science Journals should be kept in a SAFE location so they can be used to prepare for the 2024 DESSA 8th grade State Test. Science Post Test Schedule for 7th grade: 6/7 for science block 1B; 6/8 for science blocks 3A and 4A; 6/12 for science block 1A
Zrebiec 8th grade Science:. The 8th grade science students will take their Science Journals HOME this week. Students are working on i-Ready at the beginning of this week. As they finish, an extra credit assignment will be offered that is due Monday, June 5th. We also will begin our study of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We will watch parts of 3 different productions of this play and closely read important passages to introduce HOW to read Shakespeare. In addition, I have posted an assignment on Schoology for 8th grade students only. I would like each student to select 1 picture to upload on this assignment. The picture should capture a moment at school or a school-related event that was special to the student. This can include any school-related activity such as a classroom experiment, the 8th grade dance, a sporting event, one of the concerts, the play, Builders Club, Math League, etc. The picture must be of the student uploading the picture.
