Bernice Benjamin

  • My name is Ms. Bernice Benjamin (formerly Bernice Wilks), and I am excited to begin my eleventh year as the Physical Education Teacher on the Expressive Arts Team at Oberle Elementary School.  My teaching environment is one that encourages good sportsmanship.   Students will participate in co-operative and competitive physical activities such as Cross the River, Shipwreck, Soccer, and Homerun Derby.  Pre and post assessments will be given, and state-mandated Fitnessgram Testing will be administered to 4th grade students.  Rock, Paper, Scissors is a problem-solving technique students will be taught during P.E. class, reinforced throughout the school day, and used at recess. In addition, I will continue to incorporate our PBS initiated program The 7 Habits of Happy Kids- “The Leader in Me” which is our school-wide program that encourages students to take responsibility for their learning and social growth.  Even though students only meet for P.E. once a week, occasionally homework will be given to reinforce skills learned in class.

It is Christina School District’s policy that medical excuses are required for students who are unable to participate in Physical Education Class.  Further, for the safety of your child and all the children participating in Physical Education activities, sneakers MUST be worn during gym class, otherwise students will be required to sit on the sidelines and not participate, which does affect the gym grade.  Students are encouraged to bring sneakers to school in snowy and rainy weather, and change into them for class.  Given the need for increased physical activity to combat childhood obesity, it is imperative that your child is prepared to participate in Physical Education Class.  I thank you in advance for providing documentation for exclusionary reasons and for having your child prepared for class.

I look forward to this school year, and anticipate an increase in the students’ fitness level, and knowledge.

    Sincerely,

    Bernice Benjamin
