Safe Reopening of Christina Schools

Message from Superintendent Dan Shelton, Ed.D.

August 7, 2020

Dear Christina School District Staff, Parents and Community:

We want to thank those of you who took the time to complete our School Reopening Survey. Your input remains crucial to our planning process and helps guide our discussion and decision around how and when to safely reopen schools. We received an overwhelming response of over 7,560 parents/guardians, students, faculty/staff and community who participated in our study.

Governor John Carney announced earlier this week that he is formally extending the State of Emergency declaration for another 30 days and that Delaware schools may open under a hybrid scenario next month, with a mix of in-person and remote instruction and significant safety precautions to limit transmission of COVID-19.

We realize that the remote learning option may be the only appropriate route based on the current conditions. However, our committees are now determining the criteria for each phase of our re-entry plan. Please rest assured that our strategies are focused on the safety and well-being of our staff and students and that we will be vigilant to ensure our community remains healthy. We believe that taking the time to ensure the plan is fully developed is an essential component of ensuring safety and that our students are receiving the highest quality educational experience they can for each given circumstance.

Christina’s Board of Education confirmed on Wednesday that Christina schools would reopen on September 8. Our School Reopening Work Groups and the multiple subcommittees are working tirelessly on a variety of scenarios either all remote or a combination of remote and some in person instruction, as we consider the safest way to reopen schools. They work with a diverse group of parents, staff, teachers, nurses, and community stakeholders to evaluate every perspective of this very complex topic.

The Reopening Work Groups are close to finalizing recommendations and we will continue to provide regular updates considering the changing nature of COVID-19 cases and guidance from Delaware Public Health. We anticipate sharing our formal School Reopening Plan with parents and the community as soon as possible. Additional updates can be found at www.christinak12.org

We recognize you may have questions regarding our school reopening plan. We will be developing a Frequently Asked Questions document that should answer many of your questions. This too will be posted on our website as soon as our reopening plans are released.

Once again, we are extremely grateful for you contributing your time, your honest information, and your thoughtful suggestions. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work diligently to prepare for the upcoming school year.
