Juneteenth - Schools & Offices Closed June 19

Juneteenth. Rejoice. Reflate. Relate.

Consistent with and in support of Governor John Carney’s announcement today Christina School District schools and offices will be closed on Friday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were free.

Let’s use this day as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of African Americans and to renew our commitment to confronting inequality everywhere for all people.
