CSD Celebrates Juneteenth - Schools & Offices Will Be Closed June 18
Consistent with and in support of Governor John Carney’s announcement today, Christina School District schools and offices will be closed on Friday, June 18, in observance of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth, recognized annually on June 19, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were free.
Let’s use this day as a meaningful opportunity to recognize the contributions of African Americans and to continue to learn and reflect on how we can move forward in unity.
