Shue-Medill Middle School Hosts CSD’s First AVID Showcase
Recently, Shue-Medill Middle School proudly hosted the first AVID Showcase for the Christina School District. This event provided a unique, in-person opportunity for educators to witness AVID implementation firsthand, exchange best practices, and engage in hands-on learning about the program. Numerous student ambassadors, along with Shue's AVID leader, Ms. DeFlaviis, actively participated in showcasing the initiative. Classrooms displayed various WICOR activities—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading—illustrating the dynamic nature of AVID.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and it's a national program designed to support students in preparing for and succeeding in college and post-secondary careers, offering academic support and resources to help them achieve their academic goals. AVID aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary for college readiness and success.
Key Components:
-
Academic Support: AVID provides instruction in essential skills like note-taking, time management, organization, reading, writing, and study strategies.
-
Tutorials: Students receive regular tutorial support from peers and AVID-trained tutors.
-
College Awareness: AVID programs emphasize college awareness, including field trips to colleges, information about the application and financial aid processes, and career exploration.
-
WICOR: AVID uses WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies to enhance student learning and engagement.
The AVID elective is currently being offered to students in grades 6 through 12. Students must apply to be in the pathway using the application linked below. Additionally, AVID is being implemented schoolwide in several of our elementary schools.
