Thursday Trivia Recap: Like the other school districts in New Castle County, the Christina School District was established in 1981 following desegregation efforts. Even though the district is less than 50 years old, it has already celebrated many important “firsts.” Can you name some of these milestones? Specifically, who was the very first superintendent of the Christina School District, and who was the first female superintendent to lead the district?

This one was a doozy! Google couldn’t save us on this one!

Answer: Christina's first superintendent was Dr. George V. Kirk marking the beginning of strong leadership in the district and the District's first female superintendent was Dr. Lillian Lowery, who championed education reform throughout the United States.

George V. Kirk: Serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, the Philadelphia native returned to graduate from Temple University and went on to work as a math and science teacher in Pennsylvania. He came to Delaware in 1972 and worked as an administrator in Seaford and superintendent in Smyrna. He became superintendent of the Newark District and was a key player in guiding New Castle County through the desegregation order. He went on to head the Christina district, which was formed as a result of the order. George V. Kirk Middle School in the district is named in his honor. He retired in 1985 to a small farm in New London, Pa., where he raised sheep and played organ at the New London and Newark United Methodist churches. The Newark church named a concert series in his honor.

Dr. Lillian Lowery: Lowery came to Delaware in March 2006, taking the helm of the 17,000- student and 2,200-employee Christina School District. An expert in doing more with little, Lowery led Christina School District out of a $28 million budget deficit. She worked in the District for three years before taking the position of secretary for the Delaware Department of Education in 2009.  Lowery left Delaware in 2012 to work as the state superintendent of schools in Maryland, a position she held until 2015.

CORRECTION!!!!

Remember when I said Google couldn’t save us? Well, thankfully we have some CSD vets who could….
