English Language Learners (ELL)
-
English Learners (ELs) are those students who speak a language other than English as their first language. The Christina School District provides ELLs with academic and social English language skills needed for them to be successful in school. All students, including ELLs, follow the Christina School District curriculum and receive grades from their regular education teacher on grade-level standards.
The following service options are available for ELLs in the Christina School District:
Pull-Out Services
ELL students spend one period or more every other day with an ESL teacher in order to receive focused instruction in social and instructional language, vocabulary, communication, and the language of the content areas.
Push-In Services
ELL students receive instruction in the general education classroom alongside their peers as the ESL teacher collaborates with the regular education teacher and provides targeted instruction.

Eligibility Determination Process
After registration and the Home Language Survey are completed, depending on the answers, students will be administered a test to determine their English proficiency. Those students who score below the state requirements are eligible to receive services. If a child is eligible, the ELL office will contact parents to review program options. Parents may choose the program that will best address the language needs of their child. -
Assessments
AssessmentsThe WIDA MODEL™ for Kindergartners and the WIDA Screener for grades 1-12 are the placement tests that are administered, upon registration into any Delaware public school, to all students whose native language or home language is other than English. The test results help to determine whether a student requires language support and the number of contact hours they will receive. After students are identified as English Language Learners and receiving the appropriate instructional support, they will continue to be assessed annually with the ACCESS for ELLs until they meet the exit criteria set by the Delaware Department of Education. The results of all assessments are mailed home.
