World Language Immersion

  • Christina School District currently offers elementary and secondary World Language Immersion (Mandarin Chinese-English) for students at two schools:

    • Downes Elementary School (Grades K-5)
    • Shue-Medill Middle School (Grades 6-8)

The Delaware World Immersion Program began as an initiative by former Delaware Governor Jack Markell in 2012, who invested $1.9 million in the program with the goal of reaching nearly 8,000 students in K-8 immersion programs by 2020.

    Elementary School Immersion

Downes Elementary School offers language immersion in Mandarin Chinese for Kindergarten through 5th-grade students as part of a statewide World Language Immersion Program.  The program was implemented at Downes Elementary in the 2013-2014 school year.

This is an elementary immersion program, where students learn academic content through a second language. They learn the second language by encountering and using the language in multiple meaningful contexts. For example, students will have reading instruction in English, but may have instruction in math and other subjects in Mandarin Chinese. Students will spend half of the school day immersed in English instruction, and half of the day in Chinese. Classes will have two teachers, one for each language, and will coexist with traditional instruction. Students will be able to continue their immersion experience through elementary school and into middle school.

    Middle School Immersion Continuation

Shue-Medill Middle School will offer Mandarin Chinese Immersion beginning with 6th grade in the 2019-2020 school year, with a full 6-8 grade middle school language immersion program by Fall 2021. Students in the Downes Elementary School Chinese Immersion program will continue their immersion education at Shue-Medill Middle School.

  • Hello in Mandarin Chinese

    Why Immersion?

More than forty years of research consistently documents the power of immersion education to help students attain high levels of world language proficiency.  No other type of instruction, short of living in a non-English-speaking environment, is as successful.  Young children especially thrive in this type of learning environment where learning a new language comes as naturally as learning their first one.

  • How to Apply

Enrollment in the Chinese Immersion program is available for Kindergarten and possible limited seating for 1st grade students only. Parents interested in enrolling their child in the Chinese Immersion program must complete the Delaware School Choice application.
