AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID is a college readiness system, a set of strategies to build the learning, study, and academic behavioral skills that are essential for success in rigorous coursework such as honors, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment courses. AVID students learn how to:
- Critically read text
- Utilize a focused note-taking system
- Collaborate
- Utilize Higher-level thinking skills
- Organize information and manage time effectively
- Be a leader in their school and community
The AVID elective is currently being offered to students in grades 6 through 12. Students must apply to be in the pathway. Please talk to your school counselor for more information.

The Ideal Christina School District AVID Elective Student
AVID is an elective college-preparatory program that prepares students to attend a four-year college upon high school graduation.

- Academic success in college-preparatory courses.
- Successful completion of college eligibility requirements.
- Enrollment in college-prep courses throughout high school to ensure enrollment in a four-year college or university upon graduation.

Student Expectations
Student Expectations
- I will take responsibility for my own learning
- I will maintain satisfactory citizenship, by following the CSD Student manual
- I will maintain between 85%-90% daily attendance in all my classes, with few tardies
- I will maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA or will be placed on a probationary contract.
- I will enroll in all college-prep courses (including honors and Advanced Placement).
- I will attend a summer program to take additional coursework and/or to raise my grades to maintain my college eligibility.
- I will be an active learner, be prepared for all classes with all assigned work completed, take Cornell notes, and be an active participant in all activities.
- I will come to AVID class prepared for tutorial sessions by bringing higher-level questions, my Chromebook.
- I will ask questions to help my peers and collaborate with my classmates and tutors to find the answers to my own questions.
- I will participate in extracurricular activities and community service.
- I will prepare for and take college entrance exams such as the PSAT®,SAT®, and/or ACT.
- I will complete all assignments in all academic courses
- I will seek assistance when needed

Other Expectations
- I will complete and return the application packet by the established due date.
- I am aware that 3 or more of my teachers will be asked to complete recommendations regarding my performance.
- I am aware that I will have an interview with the building Site Team prior to being accepted into the program.
- I understand that I may need parental support in meeting these goals
- I understand that I will continuously be enrolled in the AVID elective through my senior year.

AVID Outside the Classroom
Students in AVID benefit from experiences that are not limited to the classroom setting. These experiences provide the students with opportunities to build leadership skills and to work together with their peers to develop skills for successful collaboration with their peers and others.
